Tetra Pak Reduces Food Waste and Losses by Accelerating Production Services

Tetra Pak, is expanding its services to enhance efficiency and reduce food losses in the food and beverage production process. Acknowledging the broader challenges faced by the food supply chain, Tetra Pak aims to tackle the global issue of food loss, which amounts to approximately 14 percent of the world’s food, valued at $400 billion annually.

Kepner Tregoe, a renowned consulting firm, has recognized Tetra Pak’s commitment to problem-solving methods in food packaging manufacturing, presenting them with an Excellence award for their achievements.

Food loss not only affects the availability of food but also results in significant water wastage. Within the 1.3 billion tons of food wasted worldwide each year, an estimated 45 trillion gallons of water are lost, according to the World Resources Institute.

Roberto Franchitti, Executive VP, Services at Tetra Pak, emphasized the collective responsibility to address food loss, stating, “We are stepping up our efforts to help tackle loss in food manufacturing by improving machine performance, minimizing failures that could lead to production stoppages and subsequent food loss, and focusing on refurbishing and reselling used equipment to ensure nothing goes to waste. This contributes to responsible production and the circular economy.”

Tetra Pak’s waste reduction solutions encompass a range of offerings, including consumables, plant components, upgrades, and asset management solutions. These solutions aim to optimize operational performance, reduce downtime, improve response time, and extend the equipment’s lifetime through refurbishment and reuse.

Sasha Ilyukhin, Global VP of Processing Services and Services Solutions at Tetra Pak, highlighted the positive impact of their services, stating, “In the Americas, 8 food producers utilizing Tetra Pak Expert Services have collectively reduced their CO2 emissions by 7.62 kilotons, equivalent to 9% of their total plant emissions. This progress is encouraging, and we plan to deploy these services in additional markets.”
